What about Boeing's mission and the work we do inspires you?
I’m inspired by Boeing’s presence in all areas of innovation – from developing space shuttles like the CST-100 to flying taxis to the Unmanned Undersea Vehicle. Boeing’s products provide a means of transportation for everyone – from our troops to executives to the flying public.
What internship do you participate in – Business, Engineering or IT & Data Science Analytics?
I am an engineering intern in Boeing Defense, Space & Security.
What Boeing product(s) or service(s) do you work on?
I support the FAA certification of executive transport aircraft (primarily VC-25A) through the Organization Designation Authorization.
What's been the most rewarding project you've worked on as a Boeing intern? What did you do specifically on that project?
During my internship, the most rewarding project I’ve supported was the implementation of The Boeing Company Organization Designation Authorization (ODA). Until November of 2018, BCA, BGS, and BDS had separate ODAs that operated under different processes. I supported the implementation by developing enterprise processes and procedures to improve business objectives. I created these processes and procedures by collaborating with subject matter experts across the enterprise to develop requirements, which in turn improved process outcomes.
How will your internship experience at Boeing influence your future career?
My internship at Boeing has helped me learn that engineers can make a difference in the company even when they’re not acting in a typical engineering role. My strengths lie in collaborative and management environments rather than an analytical or technical environment. After interning at Boeing, I know that there’s a place here for engineers of all skill sets and strengths.
How do you think we are pushing the limits of aerospace technology?
Boeing is pushing the limits of the aerospace industry by leading the way with diversity and inclusion. It’s been shown that a diverse group of people is more innovative than a group made of people of similar backgrounds. Boeing is a melting pot of people with different experiences and skill sets, which gives us a competitive edge in innovation and business.
Describe 1-2 things you’ve learned as an intern that you wouldn’t learn from your coursework.
In my internship, I’ve learned the importance of communication and how to effectively communicate with people in face-to-face and virtual environments. In my classes, it seems like the objective is to avoid failure. However, in my internship at Boeing, I’ve experienced failure and learned how to use those failures to make myself a better engineer.
What's something you wish you knew before you started your internship?
I wish I would’ve known that not all engineers will apply the theories they learned in school, but all engineers will apply problem-solving principles that are innately learned in their courses.
