Marcus McCollum | Engineering Intern
Boeing Business Unit: Boeing Defense, Space & Security - Phantom Works
Location: Huntington Beach, California
University: Howard University
Degree Program: Electrical Engineering
What about Boeing's mission and the work we do inspires you?
Boeing inspires me because I see diversity growing. I see leaders across the company who are women and people of color, and that tells me that not only am I welcomed here, but I am also valued here. I’m fully aware of the investments and partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) to increase diversity, and I see the work that HR does to recruit more diverse talent. I have experienced the Boeing Sophomore Immersion Program that partnered with TMCF and have also experienced the EAHI recruitment process at Howard University.
What internship do you participate in – Business, Engineering or IT & Data Science Analytics?
I participate in an engineering internship.
What Boeing product(s) or service(s) do you work on?
I support the CST-100 Starliner.
What's been the most rewarding project you've worked on as a Boeing intern? What did you do specifically on that project?
The most rewarding project has been creating and updating schematics with Mentor Graphics for the Analog Interface Module in the Integration Propulsion Controller on the CST-100 Starliner because I’m gaining technical experience in the electrical engineering field and will be able to see the product I supported in the sky one day.
How will your internship experience at Boeing influence your future career?
This internship experience with Boeing helped solidify that I want my career to be with Boeing. As a rising junior at Howard University, I envision my next internship with service engineering in customer support for the summer of 2020 in Southern California. For the long term, I hope to transition into a management role and continue to advance at Boeing.
How do you think we are pushing the limits of aerospace technology?
We’re pushing the limits of technology by tackling anomalies and developing products that the world has not been exposed to before.
Describe 1-2 things you’ve learned as an intern that you wouldn’t have learned from your coursework.
My internship exposed me to project management firsthand. I was able to sit in meetings with my manager, Wayne Pauley, and observe all of the different aspects that are involved, like the needs of the team, ordering parts, schedule conflicts, the wants of the customer and, most importantly, safety when developing products. I was also exposed to real flight hardware that will be on a Boeing product. These are experience that simply would never occur in a classroom.
What's something you wish you had known before you started your internship?
Before starting my internship, I wish I had known how much Boeing was connected to and invested in the people. During informational sessions and orientation, all companies talk about it, but Boeing really embodies it. The people of Boeing are all open, collaborative and willing to help. I’ve been able to interact with other interns, join my local BBEA chapter, gain mentors, speak to executives and develop relationships that will last a lifetime.
