What about Boeing's mission and the work we do inspires you?
I’m inspired by Boeing’s commitment to being the best aerospace company in the world while maintaining corporate values such as integrity, quality, and safety. I embody these core values, and it’s easy to see why we’re champions in this industry because of our inclusive and familial work culture, unparalleled work ethic, and cutting-edge innovations.
What internship do you participate in – Business, Engineering or IT & Data Science Analytics?
This summer (Summer 2019), I’m an Engineering intern working on the Ground-Based Mid course Defense (GMD) effort as a Systems Engineer for the BDS business unit. Last summer (Summer 2018), I was an IT intern working as a Versatile Technologist for the BCA business unit.
What Boeing product(s) or service(s) do you work on?
This summer (Summer 2019), I’m working on multiple efforts such as integrating Agile/Jira into the entire GMD program and getting them to adopt this industry technology, analyzing and improving the flow of the Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) process, and supporting with Software Assurance.
What's been the most rewarding project you've worked on as a Boeing intern? What did you do specifically on that project?
Since I still have a ways to go for my Engineering internship this summer (Summer 2019), I’ll reflect on my success from the previous year (Summer 2018). During my time as an IT intern, I led an OS upgrade, found underutilized devices, and improved focused efforts around asset utilization and demand management involving over 36,000 corporate computers across Boeing facilities in the US from Windows 7 and below to Windows 10. I also got to re-image and test several versions of the Windows 10 image for bugs and vulnerabilities to prevent the WannaCry ransomware. I’d say that this is one of my greatest achievements and most rewarding projects I’ve worked on as an intern because I had a direct impact across all business units within Boeing, saving us tens of thousands of dollars.
How will your internship experience at Boeing influence your future career?
The intangibles I picked up from all my internship experiences with Boeing, such as corporate values, time management/work balance, and the aerospace/missile defense knowledge I gained, have developed me into a more skilled professional. This has influenced me to become an elite leader, whether it’s giving back to my community, working on my personal tech startup, or coming back to Boeing to train and expand upon my diverse skill set as an upcoming engineer and innovator.
How do you think we are pushing the limits of aerospace technology?
Besides being the largest manufacturer of satellites and commercial jetliners in the world, being one of the world’s largest defense contractors, and being the United States’ largest exporter in sales, we’re consistently the best overall in any endeavor and innovation we touch. We are world-class. Forget pushing limits – we define aerospace as we continue to pioneer more groundbreaking technologies.
Describe 1-2 things you’ve learned as an intern that you wouldn’t learn from your coursework.
As an intern, I quickly realized that learning a technical concept and getting tested on it in a school setting versus actually implementing it is a completely different experience. My coursework is just the training wheels. A lot of being an engineer in the industry is learning on the job, doing research, and trying to make steady adjustments over time. If I fail exams at school, it will only adversely affect me. However, if I make a critical mistake during my internship, it will not be cost-effective and will directly impact my team/business unit.
What's something you wish you knew before you started your internship?
Since this is my second official internship with Boeing, I’d recommend all prospective interns to pack light and enjoy your summer to the fullest because it will all be done in a blink of an eye. Take advantage of the free fitness center to maintain/get in shape, go out with your fellow interns and have fun nights. And, last but not least, travel around the area where you are staying over the summer and other states surrounding it! Make sure to network with your fellow interns, managers, and coworkers because they’ll be important connections and resources for your future career plans, whether it’s letter of recommendations, references, or anything else.
