What about Boeing's mission and the work we do inspires you?
Inspiring the next generation of innovators means a lot to me. Most of my time at university and college was to mentor students and help them understand Engineering – to teach them its importance and explain the benefits of what they can achieve. Having such a huge, influential company take time to talk to the next generation really shows how important this sector is and how they can change the world they live in.
What internship do you participate in – Business, Engineering or IT & Data Science Analytics?
I participate in the Engineering sector of Boeing. I work in the defense sector of Boeing. Therefore, I currently work on fixed wing aircraft, which are the C-17 and Chinook. I’ve also completed some work on the Apache. I’m also currently Design Engineer for an autonomous system project.
What's been the most rewarding project you've worked on as a Boeing intern? What did you do specifically on that project?
I’m working on an autonomous systems project. My manager has given me the role of Design Engineer. This is my first project where I’m taking charge of my own work. To begin with, I was nervous about being in charge of myself. I’ve now settled into the project, and I’m so happy my manager has given me this opportunity. It’s given me a chance to show my manager and myself that I can take on any challenge I’m faced with. This project involves me speaking to fellow colleagues from other locations and reviewing all documentation in order to create a design certificate so the system can go through to the testing stage. The most challenging part of this project is to keep to the time frame, as it’s very short. However, I’m confident that with good planning this task will be done on time.
How will your internship experience at Boeing influence your future career?
Starting this internship at Boeing helped me decide whether this is the path I want to take in the future. I can honestly say this is the right path for me. Having Boeing on my CV will help me improve my chances of securing a job in the engineering sector once my degree is complete, as Boeing is such a high rated company by many people. Boeing gave me the opportunity to take charge of my own work and be independent. This improved my confidence, which will show in interviews in the future.
How do you think we are pushing the limits of aerospace technology?
Boeing is advancing so much in technology to improve the way people travel. This spreads across from the engineering side, making the world cleaner by making the aircraft more eco-friendly, and making travel safer. Boeing has also partnered with NASA to produce products that can go into space, which makes Boeing stand out as a company, as they are widening their products not just for commercial and defense but also space. Boeing has high ambitions. For example, they’re producing a space capsule that will take people to and from low-earth orbit. The technology to complete this is so advanced and shows their competitors that they have the technology and knowledge to create a high-end product.
Describe 1-2 things you’ve learned as an intern that you wouldn’t learn from your coursework.
Learning to communicate with people in a professional setting. Understanding that the way you speak to your coworkers and managers is completely different from that of tutors/lecturers and fellow students. As an intern, I’ve learned that networking is very important for my future. Getting to know people in other sectors helps create better insight into the company and helped me understand other people’s roles and how they influence my work. Colleagues who aren’t necessarily based at your site will help you in any way they can, so you’re never alone.
