The Opportunity
Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) is delivering the MQ‑28 Ghost Bat, a next‑generation collaborative uncrewed combat air vehicle for the Australian Defence Force.
BDA seeks a Senior EHS Specialist to embed safety, health and environmental excellence into the MQ‑28 Production Facility at Wellcamp (main build completion expected late 2026). You will apply your EHS expertise across people, parts, processes, facilities, equipment and tooling to enable safe, compliant, efficient production.
The role focuses on safety‑in‑design and review input before and during installation and commissioning of manufacturing and assembly systems, including early factory fit‑out. You'll work with engineering, operations, facilities and program teams to identify hazards, define risk controls, and configure the facility for safe, compliant operation.
After commissioning, you will sustain and improve EHS performance under BDA's safety management system, champion a generative safety culture and lead continuous improvement in a complex aircraft manufacturing environment.
Why this is exciting
- Be on the ground floor of Boeing's first Australian manufacturing facility in 50 years and contribute to the build and ongoing development of a state-of-the-art site that will deliver Australia's military-designed combat aircraft and redefine how advanced aircraft are made.
- Work on a high‑visibility, advanced defence program (MQ‑28) that combines autonomy, aerospace systems and innovative production approaches.
- Shape the future of Australian aerospace manufacturing - your work will support national defence capability and the growth of local industry.
What you'll get to do:
- Review and assess plant layout, workflow and facility configuration for safe movement of people/materials, segregation, machine guarding and emergency egress.
- Provide EHS input to safety‑in‑design and other key review processes prior to and during installation and commissioning of manufacturing equipment and systems.
- Advise on process safety, including high‑hazard processes, chemical storage, hazardous materials handling and environmental protection.
- Support industrial hygiene (noise, air quality, lighting, thermal comfort, ergonomics) and exposure control activities.
- Review drawings, 3D models and designs for EHS impacts from design and maintenance decisions.
- Collaborate to develop EHS Management Plans, risk assessments and site business processes for safe, compliant manufacturing.
- Conduct EHS inspections, audits and incident investigations; advise on corrective/preventive actions and track closure.
- Implement site EHS programs, standards, procedures and training aligned with regulatory and Boeing requirements.
- Monitor and report on EHS regulatory compliance and emerging risks.
- Assess new EHS regulations and standards, recommending changes to maintain compliance and best practice.
- Promote a collaborative, safety‑first manufacturing mindset, fostering engagement and continuous improvement.
Who we're looking for
- Tertiary qualification in Health, Safety and Environment, or related discipline plus minimum 5 years' relevant EHS or equivalent experience.
- Experience providing EHS input to design and fit‑out activities (safety‑in‑design, plant/equipment installation and commissioning).
- Strong knowledge of factory layout and risk management: movement of people/materials, ergonomics, emergency egress, machine guarding and segregation.
- Understanding of facility systems (HVAC, fire suppression, electrical, waste) with EHS focus.
- Extensive hazardous materials and chemical management experience (storage, handling, labelling, spill response).
- Industrial hygiene experience supporting exposure assessments and controls.
- Proven incident investigation, root‑cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
- Practical experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 at program or site level.
- Thorough knowledge of Australian WHS and environmental legislation and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills; ability to partner with operational teams to build a generative safety culture.
- Effective time‑management and prioritisation in a fast‑paced environment.
- Willingness to be on‑site at Wellcamp.
