The Opportunity
Boeing Defence Australia is establishing a calibration function at its new Wellcamp production facility, supporting the MQ-28 program. We're looking for a technically minded Calibration Technician - Quality Test Specialist to help maintain the accuracy, reliability and traceability of the measuring and test equipment used in aerospace manufacturing.
You don't need to arrive as an experienced calibration specialist. We're open to a candidate with a strong technical foundation, a careful and methodical approach, and the aptitude to learn. Structured training and support will be provided, working in partnership with the established Calibration Office at Boeing Aerostructures Australia.
The role will combine hands-on equipment checks and calibration activities with the coordination of equipment sent to external calibration providers.
What you'll do:
- Assist in establishing and maintaining calibration processes, equipment and records at the Wellcamp facility.
- Carry out calibration, verification and functional checks on measuring and test equipment, following approved procedures and training.
- Work with equipment such as micrometers, callipers, indicators, gauges, torque tools and other dimensional or electrical test equipment.
- Use or support the use of precision measurement systems and reference equipment, which may include length-measurement and vision or imaging systems.
- Help determine which equipment can be checked or calibrated internally and which needs to be sent to specialist external providers.
- Prepare equipment for external calibration, arrange dispatch and return, monitor turnaround times, and check certificates and equipment status when items return.
- Maintain calibration schedules, status records, certificates and traceability documentation.
- Identify overdue, damaged or out-of-tolerance equipment and escalate issues in accordance with procedures.
- Work with manufacturing, engineering, tooling and quality teams to support equipment availability and measurement requirements.
- Contribute to process improvements and develop additional metrology skills, including opportunities to cross-train in areas such as CMM operation, optical measurement and tooling inspection.
Essential experience, skills and qualifications:
- A minimum Certificate IV or equivalent TAFE qualification in a relevant technical discipline, such as engineering, mechanical or manufacturing technology, instrumentation, or a related field.
- A sound practical and technical aptitude, with an interest in precision measurement, equipment and quality.
- A careful, methodical approach and the ability to follow written procedures and maintain accurate records.
- Confidence using basic computer systems for schedules, records and documentation.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work with colleagues, technical teams and external service providers.
- A willingness to learn calibration methods, measurement principles and quality requirements.
Please note: This role requires Australian citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET security clearance with the Australian Department of Defence.
Desirable, but not essential
- Experience in manufacturing, engineering, maintenance, quality, metrology or a laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with measuring tools, gauges, torque equipment or test instruments.
- Some knowledge of calibration, measurement traceability or quality systems such as ISO/IEC 17025.
- Experience coordinating equipment or services with external suppliers.
We recognise that a capable technician can develop into a skilled calibration professional with the right training. You'll receive support to build your calibration knowledge and practical capability, with opportunities to broaden your skills into related metrology disciplines such as CMM operation, optical measurement and tooling inspection.
