The Boeing Company is currently seeking a Principal Software Project Engineer to support our AvionX SW Engineering organization located in Long Beach, California | Seattle, Washington or Plano, Texas.
This position will focus on supporting the Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) Software Engineering organization.
The Principal Software Project Engineer for AvionX Software Engineering translates Software Engineering Strategies and objectives into executable software plans and verified outcomes across all AvionX software programs. This role ensures alignment between strategic software objectives driven by software engineering organization (such as Fabric adoption), OKRs to software development, verification and validation, and product delivery plans. The leader will orchestrate cross-functional software engineering governance across systems engineering, software engineering, safety, certification, quality, suppliers, and program management to drive timely certification, predictable releases, and measurable mission value.
Position Responsibilities:
Translate software engineering strategic objectives into prioritized, time-phased program plans for AvionX software across multiple product lines to define clear success criteria mapped to certification and product outcomes.
Plan and track software engineering best practice adoption such as Enterprise Software Processes, Boeing Software Factory, Design practices etc., in all our development programs.
Define and track KPIs for software maturity, defect density, certification milestone adherence, schedule variance, and benefits realized (cost, time-to-market, safety outcomes).
Create and run program governance tailored for safety-critical software: intake, prioritization (risk, certification impact, performance), resource allocation, stage-gates, technical reviews, and cadence (e.g., integrated baseline reviews, monthly program reviews) across global and distributed organizations delivering to AvionX Software.
Lead strategic supplier management for software development, to ensure contractual deliverables support required expertise and quality.
Lead risk & issue management with rapid escalation paths for technical/dependency risks impacting program milestones, safety and quality.
Drive continuous improvement — post-certification reviews, lessons learned, playbooks for certification readiness, and standard operating procedures for software strategy realization.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):
Experience driving high-level strategic approaches, develop deliverables, and execute processes
Team player with an affinity to socialize and engage with stakeholders (across global teams & US) and build strong working relationships
Must be able to partner with team members to accomplish project and departmental goals and objectives
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
Experience with the full software development lifecycle
Experience using team collaboration tools including GitLab, Bitbucket, JIRA, and Confluence
Experience in embedded real-time software development
Experience in adopting technology/AI to optimize SW Dev processes
Experience and good understanding of aerospace industry
Ability to deliver on time-sensitive activities with high quality output
Ability to work well on virtual teams across multiple time-zones
Must be flexible, with a high tolerance for organizational complexity and ability to work with partners from within Boeing and outside

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
Summary pay range for Principal Level (Level 6): $212,500 - $287,500
