Boeing Defense & Space is seeking a motivated and talented Materials and Processes Engineer - Chemistry, Contamination Control and Coatings specializing in analytical chemistry and aerospace finishing systems. We are seeking a Mid-Level, Senior or Subject Matter Expert Engineer to join our team to join our Chemical Technology team located at the Boeing facility in Huntington Beach, California.
The Huntington Beach team is looking for an experienced analytical and experimental test chemist, with over 10 years’ experience working in analytical labs to work on a wide variety of programs including space launch vehicles, satellites, commercial aircraft, and underwater vehicles. Broad knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and aerospace materials is required, as well as the ability to design and construct unique test set-ups utilizing the candidate’s knowledge of chemistry, materials, laboratory equipment and physics.
The successful candidate shall be comfortable leading complex projects, such as development and qualification of materials, with a diverse team of support staff. They should be able to develop laboratory test plans which factor in safety as well as available laboratory resources to support a wide variety of Boeing programs.

The lab is looking for this candidate to have experience repairing a variety of equipment and be comfortable using and maintaining older laboratory instruments. When the appropriate equipment is not available the successful candidate will be capable of building up novel testing setups to resolve problems with materials, parts, or processes.
Familiarity with aerospace materials will include knowing commonly used materials and their associated processes, applicable analytical methods as well as being able to verify and establish requirements in associated material specifications. Knowledge of hygergolic materials and safe handling is a plus.
Finally, the successful candidate will mentor junior staff to grow their skills and confidence in the laboratory. They will also be able to work with offsite team members and with minimal supervision required.
Position Responsibilities:
- Support Boeing programs through applied analytical knowledge
- Develop cleaning, metal finishing and contamination control methods
- Investigation of corrosion reports, recommending design changes to reduce corrosion impacts, address corrosion related inquiries around materials, processes and equipment
- Analyze failures, conduct failure analysis, lead process improvements or initiatives to finishing systems, propellant systems, and material selections
- Interface with government, external and internal customers
- Review and approve documents and drawings for finishing requirements
- Perform production acceptance and/or qualification of materials
- Assist or lead in evaluation of emerging technologies for potential application
- Mentor junior staff members
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work on-site at one of the listed location options.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
- 10+ years of hands-on lab experience
- Experience following lab safety practices
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)
- Experience teaching early career staff
- Experience with aerospace materials & processes
- Experience developing and constructing unique test setups
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in chemical engineering, chemistry, & material sciences.
Typical Education/Experience:
Expert (Level 4)
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), computer science, engineering data science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience or non-US equivalent qualifications. In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary pay range:
Level 4: $124,950-169,050
