Boeing Defense Space & Security (BDS) is looking for a System Safety Engineer to join the team in Houston, TX. In collaboration with the program safety team, you will be responsible for developing the analyses, requirements, and verifications needed to ensure that all ISS system required for both docking and robotic-captured vehicles are safe for flight crew members as well the on-orbit ISS crew.
Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including Experienced (Level 3) or Senior (Level 4) System Safety Engineer
Primary responsibilities:
- Works with our Safety cross-functional team to lead risk-based hazard analyses at a system level, identify appropriate control and mitigation strategies, write and flow down safety requirements.
- Reviews system vehicle-level and ISS concept of operations, system architecture, and system design from a safety perspective, and collaborate on software, hardware, and operations systems designs to enhance the system safety to meet NASA requirements.
- Performs safety analysis, develops and maintains safety documentation, and supports safety panel reviews for International Space Station (ISS) Payloads and Systems Integration.
- Identifies and quantifies safety risks
- Assures compliance with all NASA safety requirements
- Provides detailed hazard reports and recommendations for risk mitigation strategies
- Prepares and presents technical presentations to NASA and Boeing Safety boards and panels
- Participates in Safety Panel Reviews
- Reviews flight documents, operational scenarios, and subsequent changes for safety impact;
- Participates in technical interchange meeting and working group meetings as required
- Provides real-time and post-flight engineering support for flight anomaly investigations
- Works with NASA, Space Station contractors, and International Partners
- Collaborates with reliability engineers to produce complete and accurate reliability assessments, including Fault Tree Analysis (FTAs) and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEAs)
- Develops test plans to verify safety requirements and validate fault handling capabilities
- Collaborates with subsystem engineers to flow safety requirements to suppliers and oversee compliance
- Collaborates with NASA subject matter experts to ensure hazard analyses, safety requirements, and fault management strategy meet NASA contract requirements
- Prepares safety reports for NASA, including Integrated Hazard Reports, Non-Compliance Reports (NCRs), Verification Tracking reports and Operating and Support Hazard Analysis
- Leads Safety Reviews to describe and explain rigorous safety approach to the satisfaction of internal and external review boards
- Exhibits moral and interpersonal courage to speak up when safety deficiencies are identified
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills and Experience):
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement
- Level 3: 5+ years of experience in an engineering discipline
- Experience writing hazard reports
- Experience presenting hazard reports to customer boards and/or review panels
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills and Experience):
- Level 4: 9+ years of experience in an engineering discipline
- 5+ years or more experience writing hazard reports
- 5+ years or more Experience presenting hazard reports to customer boards and/or review panels
- 4+ years of experience with spacecraft, payloads, ground systems, and/or space mission systems
- Experience applying systems engineering principles during the development of complex hardware/software solutions on an aerospace platform
- Experience developing cross functional processes, creating and managing engineering deliverables (i.e. Engineering / Manufacturing, Engineering / Supply Chain, Engineering / Program Management, Engineering / Quality, etc.)
- Experience do you have working with Non-conformance (NCR) processes
- Experience interfacing with NASA safety boards and panels

Summary Pay Range:
- Experienced (Level 3): $114,750 - $155,250
- Senior (Level 4): $141,100 - $190,900
