The Opportunity
The Engineer - Software contributes to the design, implementation, verification, and support of avionics, sensors, data communications, embedded computers, user interfaces and related software for Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS).
Working under general supervision, the Engineer - Software applies established engineering practices, standards, and troubleshooting techniques to deliver defined components and features of moderate scope and complexity within a project team.
Responsibilities
- Perform requirements analysis and decomposition for assigned features or subsystems, working from higher-level requirements and guidance.
- Translate assigned requirements into component-level specifications, unit designs and testable implementation tasks.
- Implement, unit-test, and debug software and embedded solutions in a commercial development environment; follow coding standards and configuration management practices.
- Support analysis and resolution of customer support issues for existing fielded products and provide clear defect reports and remediation plans.
- Conduct trade studies of moderate scope and prepare system interface definitions, verification and acceptance plans for assigned components.
- Design and develop software solutions as part of a cross-functional team; follow approved design patterns and reuse strategies.
- Plan and participate in system integration, laboratory and field test and evaluation for assigned components; execute test cases and document results.
- Assist with the construction of prototype and production validation activities for assigned assemblies or modules.
- Create and maintain technical deliverables such as unit-level design notes, test procedures, build/deploy scripts, and user or maintenance advisories for assigned items.
- Perform configuration identification and control for assigned components and contribute to change requests.
- Assist with technical project planning, effort estimates, execution tracking, and progress reporting for assigned work packages.
- Support non-conforming product review and remediation activities within assigned scope.
- Contribute technical content to internal business cases and customer proposals as requested.
- Participate in engineering process measurement and improvement activities, suggesting practical changes based on hands-on experience.
Experience/Qualifications
Essential:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechatronics, Avionics, Electrical/Electronics, Software Engineering, or related technical discipline.
- 2+ years professional experience in specification, design, implementation, test and in-service support of electronic and software products.
- Practical experience coding in C++ and C#(.net); familiarity with Windows and Linux development environments.
- Experience developing graphical user interfaces and writing unit tests.
- Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git), issue tracking, and basic CI/CD practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to manage multiple tasks and meet schedule commitments.
- Logical, systematic problem-solving skills and the ability to apply engineering standards under general supervision.
Desirable
- GUI development experience.
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, Conan, Cmake and/or Java.
- Familiarity with the Atlassian tool suite (Jira, Confluence).
- Domain familiarity in avionics (flight control), real-time computers, navigation and inertial sensors, communication systems, or EO/ LIDAR/ IR processing.
- Experience with model-based development, requirements management tools, or formal verification techniques.
- Knowledge of secure coding practices and basic cybersecurity considerations.
- Prior exposure to customer-deployed engineering operations and field support activities

- Applicants must be Australian Citizens to meet defence security requirements
- Able to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance
- You may require a Foreign Work Authorisation (FWA) in order to perform this role. This is not a requirement set or determined by Boeing but by the Department of Defence under laws issued in 2024. Please refer to the Department of Defence website to understand these requirements.
