Job Description:
Boeing Global Services is seeking an Experienced Programmer Analyst within the Digital Tech Ops team. The Tooling Analyst serves as the technical backbone for observability in the Product Ops team, focusing on back-end systems, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring tools that support software delivery. The Product Operations Tooling Analyst is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the frameworks that capture telemetry from our infrastructure and applications – from build pipelines to production runtime. Their mission is to ensure that product and delivery teams have complete visibility into system health so they can collaborate and deliver efficiently. This analyst will own the integration of observability tooling (metrics, logging, tracing platforms) and drive automation and standards that improve reliability and throughput.
Key Responsibilities
- Observability Platform Implementation: Design and maintain a comprehensive monitoring and logging architecture for both pipeline and production environments. Deploy and configure industry-leading tools like Datadog or New Relic for APM, Prometheus/Grafana for metrics, and ELK/Splunk for log aggregation to collect telemetry across all services. Ensure that distributed tracing (e.g. OpenTelemetry) is implemented in applications for end-to-end visibility into requests.
- Metrics & Alerting: Establish key infrastructure and DevOps metrics – e.g. CPU/memory utilization, error rates, build durations, deployment frequency, etc. – and set up automated alerts on abnormal conditions. Leverage the “three pillars” of observability (logs, metrics, traces) to detect issues and pinpoint root causes quickly. Build alerts and dashboards that align with SLOs (service level objectives), paging the right teams only when action is needed (avoiding alert fatigue).
- CI/CD Pipeline Health & Dev Metrics: Support and improve the software delivery pipeline by instrumenting build and deployment processes. Track DevOps performance metrics such as DORA’s four key measures – deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate, and time to restore service – providing visibility into the team’s delivery speed and stability. Identify bottlenecks in the build/test/release cycle (e.g. long test suites, flaky builds) and work with DevOps and Delivery engineers to optimize them.
- Tooling & Automation: Act as the internal tools developer for the product team’s operational needs. This includes creating automation scripts and utilities to streamline monitoring (for example, automating dashboard creation or integrating observability into CI pipelines), managing webhook integrations between tools, and maintaining any internal tool or dashboard that reports on developer productivity (commit-to-deploy times, incident metrics, etc.). Continuously evaluate new solutions (e.g. cloud monitoring services, CI enhancements) and lead PoCs to upgrade the toolchain. Manage recommended tooling to reduce tool sprawl.
- Instrumentation & Standards: Develop and promote standard instrumentation practices across product development. Provide libraries, SDKs, or examples for developers to easily emit logs, metrics, and traces from their code with minimal effort. Review telemetry data for completeness and work with teams to fill gaps (e.g. ensuring key business transactions are traced, important logs are structured and indexed). This role establishes a “golden path” for observability – a set of supported tools and conventions that make it easy for all teams to build observable services.
- Platform Reliability Support: Collaborate closely with delivery and platform engineers to uphold reliability. Assist in capacity planning, performance tuning, and incident response by providing expertise in reading monitoring data and logs. During incidents, this engineer helps interrogate system dashboards and tracing to locate issues quickly, and after incidents they drive post-mortem analysis using telemetry to prevent recurrences. They also help design on-call rotations and alert routing so that issues are owned by the right teams with minimal noise.
- Culture and Education: Champion a culture of observability and continuous improvement. Train developers in using monitoring tools and interpreting metrics, so they can debug their own services effectively. Create reusable dashboard templates and run knowledge-sharing sessions on topics like “how to instrument your service” or “using logs to debug prod issues.” Advocate for observability-driven development, where telemetry is considered from the start rather than an afterthought. Also, keep an eye on the cost of observability (managing data retention, tool licensing) to ensure we balance visibility with efficient spend.
- Monitor tooling health and usage: license/utilization tracking, performance, error logs, and SLAs; propose improvements and run periodic audits.
- Documentation and Training: Develop and maintain documentation and training materials for tooling (how-to, runbooks, admin guides) and deliver enablement sessions for the team.
Basic Qualifications (Required)
- Systems and Cloud Knowledge: Deep understanding of modern cloud infrastructure (Azure preferred) and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes). Comfortable with Linux systems, networking basics, and how microservices communicate – crucial for instrumenting and monitoring distributed systems.
- Observability Tooling Expertise: Hands-on experience with monitoring and log analytics platforms – e.g. proficient in using Grafana/Prometheus (or Datadog) to build dashboards and alerts, configuring ELK/Splunk for log search, and implementing distributed tracing (OpenTelemetry, Jaeger, or vendor APM). Familiar with setting up and tuning alerting rules and on-call schedules (PagerDuty or similar).
- Programming/Scripting Skills: Proficiency in at least one systems programming or scripting language (Python, Go, or Java preferred) to develop custom integrations and automation. Able to write infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation) to provision monitoring resources, and CI/CD pipeline scripts to embed observability in build/test stages.
- DevOps & Pipeline Experience: Solid grasp of CI/CD processes and tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, etc.). Experience monitoring and optimizing pipelines – e.g. analyzing build failure trends, test coverage tools, artifact deployment success rates. Knowledge of configuration management and deployment strategies (blue-green, canary, feature flags) is a plus.
- Problem-Solving & Analytical Thinking: Strong troubleshooting skills using data – able to parse logs, interpret metrics, and correlate events across systems. Familiarity with analyzing memory dumps, profiling performance, or reading stack traces. Expertise with root cause analysis and a proactive approach to prevent issues (via monitoring thresholds, chaos engineering, etc.).
- Security and Compliance Awareness: Basic understanding of security monitoring and compliance requirements. Know how to handle sensitive data in logs (masking PII) and support audits by providing evidence of system health. Experience with RBAC and access control in observability tools (ensuring the right teams see the right data).
- Communication: Good written and verbal communication; able to create clear documentation and run training sessions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification/Training: Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400), Kubernetes CKA/CKAD, or vendor-specific ones (Datadog Certified, etc.) demonstrating expertise in the tooling and platform management.
- Site Reliability Engineering Mindset: Familiarity with SRE principles (error budgets, SLO/SLIs) and experience implementing them. Ability to help teams define meaningful SLIs and track error budgets for services.
- Performance Engineering: Experience with performance testing or capacity modeling. Able to use APM data to identify code inefficiencies or database slow queries. Perhaps experience with load testing tools and interpreting their results in conjunction with system metrics.
- Data Pipeline for Analytics: Some knowledge of how product analytics events flow (though primary focus is infrastructure, a plus if aware of front-end instrumentation or usage data collection). This helps in partnering with the Data Analyst role to ensure product events are also captured reliably (e.g. events not dropped due to backend issues).
- Innovation & Adaptability: Up-to-date on emerging observability trends, such as AIOps or machine-learning-based anomaly detection in monitoring. Ability to experiment with such features in tools to see if they add value (e.g. evaluating an AI-driven alert noise reduction feature). Comfort with rapidly learning new platforms and integrating them if they prove useful.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field. 3+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or software engineering with a focus on monitoring and infrastructure in a software/SaaS environment. Demonstrated track record of managing observability tools or developing internal tooling for a tech team. Equivalent practical experience will be considered.
