Why did you choose to launch your career at Boeing?
I wanted to work for a company with history and experience in engineering. I needed to find myself in the factories, contributing the build of an airplane or a helicopter, and getting the necessary experience. I knew that Boeing, as one of the biggest names in aerospace, would be a great start for me.
What path did you take to Boeing?
I moved to the United States in 2013 to study Engineering at the University of Central Florida. I started as a Computer Engineer and then changed to Mechanical Engineering. In school I was very involved with various organizations and clubs, such as SHPE.
I had always been interested in aerospace and technology – rockets, engines, and the technology behind it. I was hired by Boeing in 2019 after engaging with engineering leaders at a SHPE conference.
How did your involvement in organizations like SHPE help you stand out to employers like Boeing?
Being involved in clubs and organizations helped me to develop my soft skills, like the ability to read body language and read a room. Employers such as Boeing would come to events like meet and greets, BBQs, etc., and the focus was always on more than our resumes. It was time to just talk to the company representatives and build those soft skills and relationships. Every experience is an opportunity to learn.
Building Soft Skills for Engineering Success
Here are Alexander's top tips for engineering students ready to kick-start their careers.
Get Involved: “Joining clubs and organizations in school can provide you with valuable opportunities to develop your soft skills. For example, the National Society of Sales Engineers helped me immensely in terms of learning how to adapt to and interact with different personalities when entering a room. This is an important trait for all engineers.”
First Impressions Matter: “I think it’s important to make the best first impression you can. I always wanted to stand out beyond my GPA, so I focused on being myself and letting employers see my personality. I believe my personality helped me land my job at Boeing.”
Be Yourself: “Do not be afraid to be the authentic and genuine version of you. You do not want to be hired for something that you are not. Be relaxed and let your personality come through!”
